Sensational find in Rotterdam: Customs investigators seized more than a ton of cocaine during a check in the port. The approximately 1,100 kilograms of the illegal drug were hidden in a load of bananas, as the public prosecutor announced on Sunday.

The sales value of the freight is estimated by the authorities at around 82 million euros. Stretched and circulated, the powder would probably have meant even more profit for the unknown backers.

The container with the bananas came from Ecuador and should be delivered to a company in The Hague. This company probably has nothing to do with drug smuggling, said the prosecutor. The investigation continued. The cocaine had been destroyed.
