The 35-year-old broke the men's record for Briton Kevin Murphy, who swam across the almost 34 kilometers narrow strait 34 times. However, it is still a long way from the record for women. The now 56-year-old Brit Alison Streeter holds that with 43 crossings.
Record swimmer has had enough for now
This is unlikely to change anytime soon, because McCardel has enough for now after four crossings within just 16 days. "I don't think I want to swim across the English Channel anytime soon," she told the UK news agency PA.
She and her team want to celebrate their success in England. According to her own statements, the athlete does not have to be quarantined at home - although she briefly went ashore in France. The government in London announced on Friday that travelers from France, the Netherlands and other countries will again have to comply with a 14-day quarantine obligation from Saturday.
McCardel wants to use the media attention for her athletic performance to denounce domestic violence against women. "I am proud to be able to be a voice for those who don't have one," said the Australian.
