While the fires of the summer of 2019 had aroused indignation, "the green lung" of the planet is burning even more this summer.

As the eyes of the whole world are riveted on the evolution of the pandemic and its economic consequences, another catastrophe unfolds in South America. A year after the spectacular fires that ravaged the Amazon rainforest and sparked protests around the world, the situation is even worse this summer.

According to Greenpeace, more than 10,000 fires were recorded in the first ten days of August, an increase of 17% last year. Aggravated by drought, these fires are often lit to make way for soybean crops and livestock. The NGO, through the voice of its spokesperson Romulo Batista in Brazil, asks the Brazilian government to "fight against the gangs that are rampant in the Amazon".

Practices to which Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro does not seem determined to put an end to. On August 11, the latter called the news of fires ravaging the Amazon a "lie". For the former soldier, a tropical forest “cannot catch fire”.
