Coronavirus in France: 19 new deaths, the positivity rate on the rise

2020-08-17T18:19:13.943Z

According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health (DGS) on Monday, the test positivity rate continues to increase.

In France, the circulation of the virus continues. In a new report released on Monday, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) counted 493 new cases of Covid-19 contamination in 24 hours. A low figure compared to the rise in contamination recorded in recent days. This weekend, the daily number of contaminations had also exceeded 3,000 cases.

The positivity rate of the tests, it is still slightly up, amounting to 2.9%, against 2.8% on Sunday, specifies Public Health France in its dashboard. This increase, given the low number of contaminations recorded in this report, can be explained by the high proportion of positive tests out of the total number of tests carried out, which subsequently defines the famous positivity rate.

“In mainland France, the number of new cases of Covid per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence) is increasing in all age groups. The increase is particularly marked among 25-35 year olds ”, also indicates the DGS. 21 new sources of contamination have been identified in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,013, including 627 closed.

"Nearly half of the people for whom the RT-PCR test was positive did not show any symptoms, but were therefore likely to transmit the Covid to their close contacts", warns the DGS.

Slight resuscitation

In total, 30,429 people have died from Covid-19 in France since the start of the epidemic, including 19,924 in hospitals. That's 19 more deaths compared to Sunday. The figure for deaths in medico-social establishments, including nursing homes, will be updated next Tuesday.

In hospitals, 4,925 patients are currently occupying a bed following a Covid-19 infection, and 384 are in intensive care. A figure which is up slightly compared to Sunday, with eight more intensive care beds. "The number of people hospitalized for Covid has been on the rise for 3 weeks, especially among those under 40," adds the DGS.

At the end of last week, the Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon, had already announced that the indicators of the epidemic were “bad”, without being alarmed: “there is no inevitability. The fate of the (Covid-19) epidemic is in our hands, ”he assured.

Since then, the wearing of a mask has become widespread outdoors in many French cities. Vigilance is recommended in particular in places likely to promote contamination, such as gatherings, festive, friendly or family events, explained the DGS.
