In Austria, Netflix has increased subscription prices, while in Germany everything remains the same. We reveal why there could be an increase in this country too.

In Austria, Netflix has increased subscription prices, while in Germany everything remains the same. We reveal why there could be an increase in this country too.

  • Most recently, Netflix increased subscription prices in Germany in 2019.
  • In Austria, some subscription versions have been costing more for a few days.
  • Usually the prices in Germany and Austria are increased in parallel, but Germany has been spared so far.

In August 2020, Netflix increased subscription prices in Austria by a few euros - and not for the first time. As early as April 2019, Austrian and German users had to be prepared for more issues. All of this is not surprising, because the streaming giant is constantly expanding its range of films and series.

So does that mean that prices will soon rise in Germany too ? We explain what speaks for and against an increase.

Netflix: These are the prices for the existing subscription models

If you want a Netflix subscription would like to conclude, can choose between three different models: For the basic subscription is 7.99 euros per month due, the standard fare is available for 11.99 euros a month and the premium rate costs proud 15 .99 euros a month. The differences between the subscription models can be found in the following table:

Tariffprice per monthadvantages
Basic tariff7.99 eurosFilms and series in SD resolution, streaming only possible on one device
Standard tariff11.99 eurosFilms and series in HD resolution, streaming on two devices possible at the same time
Premium tariff15.99 eurosFilms and series in Ultra HD, streaming on four devices possible at the same time

Until recently, the same prices were due in Austria. But there was a change in August 2020: the standard tariff now costs 12.99 euros and users pay 17.99 euros per month for the premium tariff . The basic tariff, however, remains the same. This change is effective immediately for new customers, reports the t3n portal, among others. Existing customers must, however, expect the higher prices from the next billing period.

Since the prices in Austria and Germany were increased in parallel in 2019, it seems very likely that the streaming service will soon announce bad news in this country too - although one thing speaks against it .

Netflix clause invalid - this is why price increases are difficult

In the past, Netflix stated in the terms and conditions that prices could occasionally be increased. A clause that the consumer association did not like at all, because it sued the streaming giant in December 2019 - with a positive result: The Berlin Court of Justice declared the said clause inadmissible because Netflix could not arbitrarily increase prices.

It is therefore unlikely that subscription prices in Germany will rise anytime soon - although it cannot be completely ruled out. Indeed, price adjustments are still possible if the authority depends on cost increases. (soa) * tz.de is part of the Ippen-Zentral-Netzwerk.
