Spain registers 37,000 new cases of coronavirus in the last week

2020-08-17T17:40:01.542Z

Madrid, Aragon and the Basque Country lead a growth that increases in just seven days by 11% the positives diagnosed since the beginning of the epidemic

The new coronavirus diagnoses in Spain continue to accelerate their growth. Despite the fact that the number of positives in the previous 24 hours offered this Monday by the Ministry of Health is lower than that of last Friday - almost 3,000 then, by 1,838 today, presumably due to the lower notification of the weekend of August 15 - , all other indicators are still higher compared to the previous two weeks.

Spain has 359,082 confirmed positive cases, according to data presented by the director of emergencies of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón. They are about 37,000 more than just a week ago, representing an increase of 11% more in just seven days.

The accumulated incidence, which last week exceeded 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous 14 days for the first time after the de-escalation, has also suffered a notable increase since Friday, jumping from 109 to 125 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Madrid, with 10,000 new positives in seven days, is the community that contributes the most to this weekly increase, although in relation to its population, Aragon (3,400 new positives) and the Basque Country (3,200) are the communities in which the incidence grows the most.

Without minimizing these increases, Simón did not want to be particularly concerned. "60% to 70% of existing infections are being detected," he pointed out to illustrate the contrast compared to March, when the vast majority of infections went unnoticed until it was too late to control the epidemic.

The objective, according to Simón, is for the communities to redouble their efforts to reach the end of the holidays and especially the beginning of the school year "with the lowest possible level" of cases.

"The situation in Madrid is worrying," continued Simón, who specified that this community is "in the situation that Catalonia was a few weeks ago", a community that has managed to improve its indicators. Regarding Aragon, the emergency coordinator has stated that it is in "an adequate trend" to achieve stabilization of the data after "experiencing a very delicate situation."

Control measures

Simón has divided the communities into “three groups”. The first is made up of those who "have experienced a bad situation" in recent weeks that has forced the imposition of control measures on the population, although in some cases they have been withdrawn after improving the indicators.

In the second group would be those like Madrid, which, coming from a much more favorable epidemiological situation, have seen it worsen in recent times. Finally, there are those who “have neither lived nor do they experience” a problematic situation.

The data published this Monday by Health shows an important growth, of about 50%, in the number of new cases diagnosed with onset of symptoms in the last 14 days, one of the indicators to which experts pay more attention to calibrate the evolution of the epidemic. These have gone from almost 12,300 positives last Monday to more than 18,000 this.

The increase is even greater, 60%, if you look at patients with onset of symptoms in the last week, which has gone from 3,300 to 5,300 in the last week.

The increases on the hospital network are smaller, although in this case it is also possible that the data is due to the under-notification for the last two holidays. Hospitalizations have barely grown since Friday and are now 1,016, just one more. The admissions to the ICU have grown, from 46 to 56 in three days, while the number of deaths has decreased, from 62 to 54.

The data included by Health in its daily balance is like each day less than the sum of the data offered by all the autonomous communities on the same date due to the accounting system used by the ministry, which only includes those in its daily tables. cases that have been reviewed and confirmed.
