  • Japan's chief virologist Hitoshi Oshitani does not consider mass tests for a coronavirus infection * to make sense.
  • He advocates isolating so-called super spreaders.
  • In a study, he attributed the development of Covid-19 herds to a few people who were often symptom-free despite infection.

Covid-19 still puzzles doctors and researchers. But more and more studies and long-term observations help to understand the disease and to prevent it. A new Japanese publication deals with the question of how the main areas of infection arise and where the risk of being infected is particularly high. Under the direction of the virologist Hitoshi Oshitani, researchers analyzed situations in which many people had contracted the coronavirus at the same time. 61 such cases with over 3,000 infected people served as the basis. Restaurants, concert halls and fitness studios were among the risky places in which many people were infected with Covid-19. What was more surprising was what scientists discovered about the people who made them super-spreaders.

Female, under 30 and without symptoms = super spreaders?

In 22 of 61 cases, the researchers were able to identify the person they blamed for spreading the virus. According to the study, it was mainly women under 30 without symptoms. The scientists working with Oshitani could not explain why they were the ones who spread the virus the most, as the Focus reported. The age, however, could easily be explained: it was mainly young people who stayed in clubs, bars or pubs - all in places with poor ventilation . Alcohol also plays an important role: the inhibitions fall, the safety margin is no longer maintained.

In Japan, according to Hitoshi Oshitani's publication, it was also karaoke bars that made coronavirus infection likely. A closed room with loud singing: a virus-friendly environment that is also mostly frequented by younger people . (jg) * Merkur.de is part of the Germany-wide Ippen-Digital editorial network .
