Berlin (dpa) - Apple is increasingly relying on streaming radio with two new live offers that are now available in 165 countries. At the same time, the iPhone company is renaming its most important radio station to date, Beats 1, to Apple Music 1.
The two new radio stations are Apple Music Hits, which showcases the favorite songs of the 80s, 90s and 2000s, and Apple Music Country, which focuses on country music.
Apple entered the online radio business in 2015 with Beats 1. Beats was the name of the headphone and music company that rapper Dr. Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine had sold to Apple a year earlier. In addition to pieces of music, artist interviews can also be heard on the station. Apple Music Manager Oliver Schusser emphasized that there are no plans to make the name for the Beats products disappear from Apple.
"Apple Music Radio now offers an unprecedented global platform for artists of all genres to talk about music, create it and share it with their fans," said Schuster. But this is just the beginning. "We will continue to invest in live radio and create opportunities for listeners around the world to connect with the music they love."
Apple is also reacting to competitor initiatives with the announcements. The streaming market leader Spotify tries to score with exclusive podcasts. Sonos, a leading manufacturer of networked loudspeakers, has introduced Sonos Radio, an application with the latest major software update, with which Internet stations from all over the world can be brought to the loudspeakers.
