As the "Rheinische Post" reported, citing participants in a conference of the Bundestag's health committee, Spahn spoke out in favor of canceling the carnival nationwide.
"I was a child prince myself and come from a carnival stronghold. So I know how important carnival is for millions of Germans. But: I simply cannot imagine carnival this winter in the midst of the pandemic. That is bitter, but it is "Spahn is quoted as saying.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) had already spoken out against street carnival in November at the end of June. The festival "does not fit into this time," said Laschet in view of the pandemic. Most recently, according to the "Rheinischer Post", the district administrator of the Rhein-Sieg district turned to Laschet and asked for the carnival to be canceled.
At the beginning of the corona pandemic in February, many people were infected with the virus at carnival celebrations. An outbreak in the Heinsberg district was attributed to a carnival session.
