(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 18 - At least one person died in the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the Philippines during the night, causing serious damage to homes and roads, and forcing many residents to leave their homes. "There are many houses damaged - reported an authority of the city of Cataingan, 50,000 inhabitants, on the island of Masbate, one of the areas most affected by the earthquake that had its epicenter in the Sea of Samar. Numerous aftershocks, at least 14, prompted the evacuation of some hospitals.
A local radio reporter reported seeing rescuers extract the lifeless body of a man from the rubble of a three-story house in Cataingan. and the police confirmed it. His wife, on the other hand, remained unscathed. At the moment there is no definite news of other victims, but several collapsed buildings are still being excavated.
The earthquake hit the archipelago that is already fighting against a strong wave of coronavirus infections, with 164 milacases confirmed and severe restrictions on travel with various modes depending on the area.
