Health reports more than 5,000 new cases of coronavirus, a third of them in Madrid

The Ministry of Health has notified 5,114 new cases of coronavirus this Tuesday, raising the total number of infected in the country since the start of the pandemic to 364,196. Two out of every five new positives have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours, while the rest correspond to the results of tests carried out in previous days and which have been communicated to Health after the daily closing of their records.

These data show some stabilization with respect to the new diagnoses reported by the ministry in recent dates (between Monday 10 and Monday 17 there were also 5,000 new cases on average), although there are still days before a clear trend can be established. On the other hand, it is evident that the increase in hospitalizations and admissions to the ICU registered in the last week, the period of time used by Health in this section. The former have grown by 8% in a single day, going from 1,016 yesterday Monday to 1,096 this Tuesday. Admissions to the ICU in the previous week, meanwhile, have gone from 56 to 65 in just 24 hours.

The increase in hospitalizations and admissions to the ICU was foreseeable due to the significant increase in diagnoses that occurred in the last two weeks, since patients usually take between five and 12 days to develop serious conditions that require admission after the start of the first symptoms.

The deaths with a diagnosis of coronavirus infection already amount to 28,670, a figure that adds 63 to those recorded a week ago by the Ministry of Health. This registry includes only those people with a positive result in a PCR test, so the actual number of deaths from the pandemic is notably higher. The estimates made by the excesses of mortality managed by the Carlos III Health Institute raise to more than 44,000 those who died from the pandemic.

The community that has reported the most new cases has been Madrid, with about a third of the total. It accounts for 704 of the 2,128 diagnoses made in the last 24 hours and 1,619 of the 5,114 new notifications (these latest data include positive cases from previous days).

If we look at the total number of new cases, Castilla y León is the second community that has communicated the most, with 588. They are followed by Andalusia (451), Aragon (422), Valencian Community (389), Basque Country (384) and Catalonia ( 276).

If the focus is on diagnoses made in the last hours, the second community is Aragón, with 374, followed by the Basque Country (282), Andalusia (202), the Canary Islands (86) and Catalonia (69). This last data should be more illustrative of the most recent evolution of the epidemic in each community if they were all equally diligent in communicating the data to the ministry, although several of them tend to send their figures days late.

New diagnoses made in people with onset of symptoms in the last 14 days, one of the indicators most valued by experts to assess the evolution of outbreaks, has dropped slightly from 18,072 patients yesterday to 17,833 this Tuesday.

The data included by Health in its daily balance is, like every day, less than the sum of the data offered by all the autonomous communities on the same date due to the accounting system used by the ministry, which only includes in its tables of the day to those cases that have been reviewed and confirmed.
