New cases of Covid-19: which departments are most concerned?

2020-08-18T15:19:33.879Z

France is facing a rebound in the incidence rate of the epidemic. An indicator particularly monitored by the authorities, which is increasing

In its daily update, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) reported, Monday, August 17, an increase in the incidence of the virus. And this, in all age groups, people aged 25 to 35 being particularly affected.

As a reminder, the incidence rate measures the number of positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants over a week.

Nationally, as of August 14, 2020, this index is back to the level of the end of April. A reality, however, contrasted according to the territories.

43 departments below the vigilance threshold

In order to distinguish the thresholds for the development of the epidemic, Public Health France has drawn two lines. One designates a “vigilance threshold”, set at more than 10 positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants over a week. The other designates an “alert threshold”, beyond 50.

In mid-August, the virus seemed to circulate very little in less than half of the departments, in particular in the rural diagonal extending from the Ardennes to the Basque Country, on the coasts of the Channel and in Corsica.

Guyana remains in the lead

The department of the Latin American continent has been at the heart of concerns for many months. At the end of June, there were more than 470 cases detected over a week, per 100,000 inhabitants.

After a vigorous campaign of tests and management of outbreaks of contamination, there were 107 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the last week.

Bouches-du-Rhône, Paris and Val-de-Marne on alert

In Metropolitan France, the department that includes Marseille, as well as Paris, are the second and third most affected provinces, respectively.

Since the start of the crisis, the Bouches-du-Rhône has been characterized by a very active policy of tests carried out among the population.

As for the capital, its data should be taken with caution, since the airport traffic and the places of residence of the people tested make the authorities more myopic than elsewhere on the situation.

A virus still vigorous in Ile-de-France

Val-de-Marne and Seine-Saint-Denis oscillate between alert and vigilance. Respectively to 51 and 49 cases per 100,000 inhabitants detected over the last week. Hauts-de-Seine follows, with 40 cases, Essonne and Val-d'Oise, around 30 cases.

In Seine-et-Marne, 24 cases were detected per 100,000 inhabitants over one week. It is always well above the threshold of vigilance.

If these contaminations are at the heart of concerns, for the time being, they are little followed by hospitalizations, periods in intensive care or even new deaths.
