Battery or cable? Carpet or hard floor? Bag or bagless? Pets or allergy sufferers? These are just a few of the questions that need to be answered when purchasing a vacuum cleaner. We will help you.

If you only have parquet or tiled floors, things are simple: any vacuum cleaner can easily handle these floors, so an inexpensive model will do the same. Things get trickier with carpets. Because then it is not only about the suction power, but also that the vacuum cleaner does not stick to the carpet. Some models therefore automatically vary the suction strength depending on the floor covering.

Cordless vacuums have become more and more popular recently. The manufacturers promise a similar suction power as with conventional vacuum cleaners - and you save yourself the annoying cable that always gets stuck everywhere when vacuuming. In reality it looks a little different. Because cordless vacuum cleaners only provide their maximum suction power in exceptional cases and for a few minutes. In normal mode, their suction power is nowhere near that of wired models. They usually make up for the lack of suction power with the help of a rotating brush. This works reasonably well on hard floors, but cordless vacuum cleaners have to paint the sails on carpets.

In addition, batteries lose capacity over time and suck increasingly poorly. Since the batteries usually cannot be replaced, a new device is often due after a few years. Good corded vacuum cleaners, on the other hand, last ten years or more.

A conventional vacuum cleaner is therefore still indispensable for most households. The most popular in Germany are so-called sled vacuum cleaners, in which the suction tube and motor unit are connected to one another via a hose. Your advantage is that only the light suction tube has to be moved when vacuuming. However, this design also has disadvantages: the vacuum cleaner that follows the suction tube often gets stuck on pieces of furniture and the bulky hose means that the vacuum cleaners are not easy to transport, especially on the stairs.

There are also stick or stick vacuum cleaners in which the motor unit and the dust bag are attached to the suction tube. This allows a more compact design that is easier to transport. To do this, the entire device has to be moved while vacuuming, which can tire over time.

Bagless vacuum cleaners have the advantage that you don't always have to have the right vacuum cleaner bags on hand. However, when emptying the container of bagless vacuum cleaners, contact with house dust can hardly be avoided. They are therefore not a good choice for allergy sufferers. For these there are special vacuum cleaners that are equipped with HEPA filters.

Especially for dog and cat owners, there are vacuum cleaners that promise to better deal with large amounts of pet hair. They often offer special attachments, but above all a stronger suction power.

Vacuum cleaners in the low to medium price segment are completely sufficient for most households. Because even cheaper models achieve good to very good results, as a test of 26 vacuum cleaners on the test portal AllesBeste has shown.

Vacuum cleaner in the test

The test winner in the AllesBeste test was the AEG VX9-2-Öko. It impresses with a very pleasant background noise. In addition, it performs so extraordinarily well that the suction strength is usually sufficient even at the lowest levels. The suction noises from the floor nozzle are then louder than the vacuum cleaner itself. In addition, the model is the only one in the test to have a swiveling hose connection. Despite being slightly overweight, the bagless Bissel SmartClean Pet has an amazing performance and sucks corners almost perfectly. Despite the floor brush, it drives smoothly on hard floors, and thanks to the automatic setting of the suction levels, nothing on the device has to be adjusted when changing the floor. The Rowenta RO4825 is inexpensive, compact and powerful. Despite its small dimensions, the device is remarkably quiet and shows many more expensive models how to do it. What is striking is its simply constructed cyclone separator, which is on par with more complicated constructions and which significantly simplifies emptying. More information and other recommended alternatives can be found in the detailed review by AllesBeste.
