Are you fed up with your scratchy towels? A woman reveals her trick to get it soft again - without any detergent.
Freshly bought towels are still fluffy and soft * and do not even want to be put down. But over time and with regular washing, they become stiff and scratchy - which not everyone likes. However, there are many simple tips to get the fibers soft again. A woman now has one of them ready, who presented her trick in a video.
Getting towels soft again: this home remedy trick attracts attention
Said clip has already been viewed over 34,000 times on the short video platform TikTok. The user "mama_mila_" reveals how she makes her towels soft again - without detergent or fabric softener. Instead, you need baking soda, vinegar, and optionally essential oils. The trick is very simple: the towels are put in the washing machine and the temperature is set between 30 and 40 degrees . Instead of the detergent, the user puts half a cup - the equivalent of around 120 grams of baking soda in the washing machine and the same amount of white household vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. If you like, you can also add a few drops of an essential oil, as "mama_mila_" means.
It also warns against packing the washing machine full - otherwise the fibers could not be shaken properly. The towels are then hung up to dry.

Vinegar in the washing machine: what to keep in mind when performing the towel trick
However, you should be careful when using and dosing vinegar in the washing machine: Vinegar can attack parts of the machine, such as the rubber seals . That is why Rolf Buschmann from the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) advises against using vinegar in the washing machine, according to a dpa report. Christine Maginot-Rohde from the Hausgeräte + manufacturer initiative explains, however, that it depends on the dosage. Vinegar essence with 25 percent acidity should not be used, neither should fruit vinegar because it could stain the laundry.
"Clear household vinegar with five percent acidity is very suitable," says the expert, according to dpa. However, 30 to 60 milliliters of it in the softener compartment would be sufficient to achieve the desired effect.
By the way: baking soda and vinegar should really be put separately from one another - baking soda in the drum and vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. Otherwise undesirable chemical reactions can occur. * Merkur.de is part of the nationwide Ippen-Digital editors network.
