In order to prevent sinking after a leak, a captain purposely steered his ship onto a beach in Westerland. After a rough repair, the "MS Oland" could now go to a shipyard.

The survey ship, which intentionally ran into sand off Sylt, is free again. After an emergency repair, the almost 23 meter long "MS Oland" detached itself from the beach with the midday flood, said a spokesman for the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection.

The ship belongs to the authority. It then drove to a Husum shipyard on its own, the spokesman said.

The "MS Oland" collided with a dam below the surface of the water during surveying work in front of the beach in Westerland on Sylt and had a leak.

Hull temporarily welded shut

The captain then put it on the beach for safety reasons, because the severity of the damage could not be foreseen at first and he feared that the ship might sink. Hundreds of onlookers followed the action.

On Wednesday, workers temporarily welded the crack in the hull of the "MS Oland". Excavators previously excavated the area around the ship. With the onset of the flood it was released again.

The four crew members were uninjured in the accident. Fuel or other hazardous substances did not leak either.
