Pop singer Billie Eilish called for US President Donald Trump to be voted out of office in November at the Democratic Party conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "Donald Trump is destroying our country and everything that is important to us," said Eilish on Wednesday evening (local time) during her video appearance as part of the largely virtual party conference.

"We need leaders who solve problems like climate change and Covid, and not deny them. Leaders who fight structural racism and inequality."

Eilish called for voting against Trump and for Joe Biden. "Silence is not an option and we cannot sit it out," said the 18-year-old.

Ex-Vice President Biden was nominated as a presidential candidate at the party conference on Tuesday. He will run against Trump in the November election.

The Democrats started their four-day party conference on Monday. Due to the corona crisis, it is taking place virtually, in a mixture of live performances and recorded video contributions.

Former US President Barack Obama also spoke out at the party conference on Wednesday evening. "Donald Trump didn't grow into the job because he couldn't. And the consequences of that failure are grave," Obama said.

In the past, Obama has been reluctant to criticize his successor. In general, it is not common for an ex-president to sharply criticize the incumbent. Little of this reluctance was felt on Wednesday.

Like Eilish, the 59-year-old called on the Americans to vote. By voting in the November 3rd election, they could ensure "that the basic principles of our democracy continue to exist". "Because that's exactly what is at stake now. Our democracy," said Obama.

Eilish became the first woman to win all four grand prizes at the Grammy Awards in January. In addition, she received the award for the best "Pop Vocal Album", thereby redeeming five out of six nominations. (Read more about the singer here: We can't avoid Billie Eilish anymore)
