The Bundeswehr is committed to the security of the German population. But how high is the salary for soldiers - and what is it based on?

Soldiers of the German Federal Armed Forces have the task of protecting the citizens of the Federal Republic and promoting the security and stability of the country and its international partners. They also provide humanitarian emergency and disaster relief. In doing so, they use their lives to protect others. Is this risk being adequately paid for?

Bundeswehr salary: This is how the federal government pays

The salary table for federal civil servants determines how much soldiers and civil servants in the Bundeswehr earn . The basic salary is based on the rank and the associated salary group (A2 to A16 or B3 to B10).

The salary group A is again divided into different levels from one to eight - depending on experience and seniority. As a rule, soldiers enter level one from their appointment. After a certain period of time - every two to four years - they climb one step up the salary table and then automatically earn more.

In addition, the Bundeswehr pays allowances for

  • certain places,
  • Offices as well
  • Familys.

Job service allowances can be allowances for field work, Sundays or public holidays - but flight personnel, mine divers or parachutists also receive allowances for their job.

Official allowances are irrevocable and pensionable and count towards the basic salary. For example, a private (A3) receives 37.64 euros per month as an official allowance, a sergeant major (A9) 300.91 euros.

Anyone who is married and / or has children also receives a family allowance - depending on the respective family situation and salary group. A married soldier / civil servant who receives child benefit for a child is entitled to a monthly family allowance of 258.15 euros.
