The French serial killer Michel Fourniret is said to have killed a nine-year-old more than 17 years ago. The ex-wife of the 78-year-old, Monique Olivier, has confirmed in court, according to her lawyer, that her former husband is the culprit in the previously unsolved case of the missing Estelle Mouzin.

According to Olivier, Fourniret kidnapped, raped and strangled the girl who disappeared in 2003, said lawyer Richard Delgenes. Olivier is now being charged with complicity, he said. The 71-year-old will be heard again before an investigative court in Paris.

Fourniret had previously been implicated in the case. However, he is said to suffer from memory loss and was only very vague. According to media reports, he said that he could no longer remember the details of the crime - including where the body was buried. In 2004, two bodies of Fourniret's victims had already been found near the Ardennes Castle in Sautou.

Where the body of Estelle is still to be examined, said Delgenes. Investigators recently searched a residential building in the municipality of Ville-sur-Lumes without success.

The investigation into the case should finally be concluded, said the lawyer for the girl's family, Didier Seban, the news platform "Franceinfo". For years, all references to the Fourniret couple as the perpetrators, said Seban. He hoped that the child's body could now be found in order to close the case for the family as well.

Fourniret, now 78 years old, also known as the "Monster of the Ardennes", and Olivier were sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2008. Fourniret had confessed to raping and murdering seven young women in Belgium and France between 1987 and 1991. His wife was sentenced for helping him "hunt virgins". In 2018, they were found guilty of another case.
