Fish are a classic for pets. But aquariums can also be used in a completely different way - for frogs, for example. However, owners should take a few precautions.
Düsseldorf (dpa / tmn) - Who says that only small fish belong in the aquarium? An alternative can also be frogs. They fascinate with acrobatic turns and loops. Aquatic frogs make funny observations possible, promises the Industry Association for Pet Supplies (IVH).
In addition to the overturns during mating, the hatching of the tadpoles from the back skin of the mother animal in little honeycomb toads is extremely worth seeing. Just like the wrestling matches of the male dwarf clawed frogs, thinks Kriton Kunz of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science (DGHT).
Along with the smooth clawed frog, they belong to the predominantly or exclusively aquatic species and do not have any great demands. "They can be kept in an ordinary aquarium and do not need any land," explains Kunz.
Many specimens would like to rest on floating plants on the surface of the water. Clawed frogs are an exception. The dig up planted water plants with preference. So they need plants that float on the surface and freely in the water - like Egeria, Lemna or Pistia, advises Kunz.
Dark and narrow hiding spots such as hollow roots, stones or half clay pipes are important for the amphibians. No fresh water, but at least one day in the bucket that has stood still, pleases the frogs.
For food they prefer living things such as water fleas and mosquito larvae, but also frozen earthworms. So that they don't jump out of the aquarium for joy, the tank absolutely needs a good cover.
"You often find astonishing gaps," warns the expert. He also does not recommend the bedroom as a location. The chirping noise could disturb sensitive minds.
