North Rhine-Westphalia's students are back in the educational institutions for just two weeks after the summer vacation - now the state's school principals have sharply criticized their state government. They complain that the concept to contain the coronavirus cannot be implemented in schools. According to an SWR report, the school management association (SLV NRW) accuses the responsible ministry of not taking into account the actual framework conditions of the schools.
The SLV NRW complains that the highest school authority is releasing its own responsibility and is handing over the entire responsibility to health authorities, school authorities and school administrators.
NRW had stipulated strict measures at the beginning of school: For example, pupils at secondary schools in the state must wear a mask not only during breaks, but also in class. In addition, teachers should regularly ventilate, the minimum distance applies throughout the school building.
Welded windows, lack of cleaning staff
According to SWR, these rules are now turning out to be unrealistic in many schools, as stated in the fire letter from the directors. For example, some school principals reported that the windows were welded shut, making it impossible to ventilate, while others lacked cleaners or caretakers.
In addition, it is impossible to bring teachers and students together in always the same groups. This is what the pandemic concept actually envisages. But if a teacher is absent due to illness, they have to be represented - in case of doubt by a colleague who otherwise does not teach in the class.
The SLV NRW therefore speaks of a "field test". "We hope that this letter will have consequences and that the public will learn how ailing our education system is anyway," said Harald Willert, chairman of the NRW school management association, the SWR, "which is now finally becoming visible through Corona."
