“Offense” or “cultural appropriation”? The rapper named his two new pairs of sneakers, the famous “Yeezy”, Israfil and Asriel, after the archangels of Islam. A decision which, once again, goes wrong.

Kanye West likes to be talked about. With exits with great fanfare. After the launch of his presidential campaign accompanied by great tearful speeches, the testimonies concerning a certain bipolarity and the desire for divorce with Kim Kardashian, the rapper still shook the networks. In question this time, the last range of sneakers "Yeezys", its collaboration with Adidas.

The names Israfil and Asriel, given to the new shoe models, correspond to those of two Archangels in Islam. The first is supposed to announce the end of the world, the second, to bring about it. Far from having conquered the public, the news has created two distinct camps: on the one hand, those who accuse Kanye West of making fun of Muslims and their religion. On the other, those who denounce a poor attempt at cultural appropriation to target a larger clientele.

In recent days, the rapper had already had to face the admonitions of some about sneakers. First in mid-August, when another of his pairs had become the laughing stock of social networks. “Sliced onions” , “turkey fillets” or even “meringues” , there were plenty of superlatives to qualify them.

On August 20, "Ye" posted the photo of Nike shoes, a direct competitor of Adidas, a brand with which he collaborates. “Wow very cool Nike… Keep innovating, the world needs it. Excellent job, ” he said before putting on a coat, saying he needed one of these pairs.

To many, this sounds like a call of the foot to the comma mark. But as often, with West, we do not know on which foot to dance.
