As a professional footballer at the Premier League club Manchester United, Victor Lindelöf has to run a lot. During a visit to his hometown of Västerås, the Swedish international has evidently shown a quick start off the field - and caught a thief on his bike.
The incident occurred on Monday in the city not far from Stockholm. The local police confirmed the attack, but did not provide any information about the rescuer's identity. A message said that a 30-year-old man on a bicycle had stolen the bag of a 90-year-old woman from the basket of her walker while driving past.
A man ran after the thief, caught him and held him until the police arrived and arrested the alleged perpetrator, who is also suspected of a drug offense. The man who ran after was "athletically built" and "apparently pretty fast on a short distance," said a spokesman.
Invited to lunch as thanks
The newspaper "Sportbladet" reports that it was the 26-year-old defender of Manchester United - and quoted an unspecified source close to the club: "Victor feels that he did exactly what everyone did in this situation would have done. "
The Västerås authorities did not mention Lindelöf's name, but thanked the helper for his courageous commitment. "The police would like to take the opportunity to thank the witness for his swift and wise intervention to recover the plaintiff's property," said a statement on the website.
According to another "Sportsbladet" report, the stolen elderly woman was touched by Lindelöf's commitment. He even jumped over a wall. As a thank you, she invited him to lunch in a restaurant. It is not known whether the footballer will accept the invitation.
