Three nights a week and 40 years of career for Indochina

2020-08-25T14:52:17.606Z

BIRTHDAY - The pop group will officially celebrate their fortieth spring next year. But its leader, Nicola Sirkis, the only survivor of the first epics, decided to anticipate this celebration by releasing the Singles Collection 2001-2021 on Friday.

Debut snubbed by the trendy press, crossing the desert in the 1990s, death of a key member: Indochina has survived it all, returned to success, and this week launches its 40th anniversary celebrations.

It is a unique example in France. " French groups that persist, there are plenty, but they do not fill the theaters: Indochine is the only one which has success over 40 years, made hits 20 years apart and has fans over three generations " , summarizes for AFP Christian Eudeline, author of the book " The Indochine Adventure " (Prisma).

Officially, the birthday of the band to Nicola Sirkis - founder and only survivor of the early hours - falls next year. But the party begins with the release of a first compilation, Singles Collection 2001-2021 , this Friday. The second part, 1981-2001 , will be delivered on November 27 (Indochine Records / Sony labels). And a stadium tour - a stage in the middle of the crowd and a 360 ° giant screen - is scheduled for spring-summer 2021.

The visual of the compilation revolves around teenagers with a punk-gothic look, half worried, half brave. " It's a tribute to what we were at the time when we were unconscious of creating a rock band, at 16-17 years old, " says AFP Nicola Sirkis, still looking sixty juvenile.

The leader is astonished and still marvels at this eternal rebirth: “ There is youth, passion, and the fear of not knowing where we are going in a world of adults. And we were very well served! We were told straight away: “the name of the band sucks! Stop everything! (laughs) ” . So we signed with the only record company that allowed us to keep our name (laughs) ”.

Indochina ... quite a novel

Choosing Indochina "it was seen as being called French Algeria ", remembers Sirkis. For those who did not see themselves as a career, it is a reference to Marguerite Duras, whom he regularly rereads just like " Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Mallarmé ". Without forgetting JD Salinger, quoted in a hit of the group.
And Indochina is quite a novel. " When the single Dizzidence Politik came out (in 1981), the trendy loved it, but when the general public took hold of The Adventurer (1982), then the trendy press said 'it's shit'", relates Christian Eudeline , also editor of the new bimonthly Vinyl & Audio .
Nicola Sirkis comments on this journey made up of ups and downs with philosophy: “ We had the mouths of it: “ what, no drummer? Ah, no it's not rock! ”. And now the same journalists revere the drum machines, well, that's the game. "

1999: the disappearance of the beloved brother

The 1990s are darkening. The group is at the bottom of the wave. A parody of the Unknowns sticks to their skin. There are also changes of musicians and drama. Stéphane Sirkis, twin of Nicola and guitarist of the group, died at the age of 39 in 1999 from hepatitis, the end of a rock'n'roll life.
Nicola Siki remembers this moment of tragedy: " It's the depression, the questions, 'why ?, what did we not know how to do ?, it's paid dearly for this story' . Then after the time of pain, comes the decision to continue: “ Indochina, Stéphane's soul is there ”.

Olivier, the fan who became a member of the group

The 2000s are those of renewal. There is a great story. Olivier Gérard (stage name Oli de Sat), a graphic designer, fan and himself a musician, sends remixes to Indochina. Nicola spots him. Give him a cover to make. The bearded man will then be the group's driver, teleprompter, then one thing leading to another, a member of the formation.
Then comes Paradize (2002), an album rich in collaborations, notably the hit I asked the moon signed by Mickaël Furnon (Mickey 3D).
The recent single Our Celebrations is accompanied by a beautiful animated clip that spans four decades. " That's all we went through, from the election of Mitterrand to the Covid-19, at the end the train stops at a station: the path is still to come, or not, we will see ", decrypts Nicola. But given his enthusiasm, this is probably not the end.
