Hydroxychloroquine reduces in-hospital mortality from Covid-19. This is demonstrated by a large multicentre observational study on 3,451 patients admitted to 33 hospitals throughout the country. The research, published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine, was coordinated by the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of the Neuromed of Pozzuoli in collaboration with Mediterranea Cardiocentro of Naples and University of Pisa and examined numerous parameters, including previous pathologies , the therapies they followed before being affected by the infection and the therapies undertaken in the hospital specifically for the treatment of Covid-19.

"We were able to observe - explains Augusto Di Castelnuovo, epidemiologist at the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of Neuromed - that, all things being equal, the patients who were administered hydroxychloroquine had a 30% lower in-hospital mortality rate than those who had not received the treatment. "In recent months - comments Giovanni de Gaetano, President of Neuromed - the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a stop to the use of hydroxychloroquine on the basis of an international observational study, subsequently withdrawn by the same authors of the research. Now the study data, deriving from the national collaboration, will help the competent authorities to better clarify the role of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of these patients ".

"While waiting for a vaccine - concludes Licia Iacoviello, Director of the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of Neuromed - identifying effective therapies is an absolute priority and we are convinced that this research will make an important contribution to the international debate on the role of hydroxychloroquine".
