(by Alessandra Baldini) (ANSA) - NEW YORK, AUG 26 - A sapphic love blossoms between Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan: "Ammonite", the new film by British director Francis Lee whose trailer has just been released, explores the relationship imaginary between real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) and another woman, Charlotte Murchison, played by Ronan.
Already in the smell of an Oscar, the film should have made its debut in Cannes: after the cancellation of the festival on the Croisette, it will instead be presented in September in Toronto and in October at the London Film Festival.
The Anning, who lived in Dorset in the first half of the nineteenth century, was snubbed by the scientists of the time and only recently has the value of her discoveries been recognized. Lee, who became famous in 2017 with the gay love story "The Land of God", was criticized last year after revealing the subject of "Ammonite" by a descendant of the palaeontologist, Barbara Anning, who called the plot "sensational" because "There is no evidence that Mary was lesbian." Lee defended her choice on Twitter: "After witnessing routine rectified gay history through culture, and since there is no evidence that Anning had heterosexual relationships, it should be allowed to see her in another context." .
Her film, the director had specified, was not a biography in pictures: taking its cue from the life of the scientist, it was intended to be a research on relations between people of the same sex in the eighteenth century. (HANDLE).
