The painting "Two laughing boys with a mug of beer" by the Dutch painter Frans Hals was stolen from a museum. The police announced.
At least one stranger gained access to the Hofje van Aerden Museum near Utrecht, which was temporarily closed due to Corona, and stole the picture through the back door in the early hours of the morning. An alarm was triggered by the police.
Frans Hals was an important Dutch portrait painter to whom a total of 222 works are assigned. About 20 of them are considered lost, including the stolen work he painted in 1626.
"Two laughing boys" shows a Kannekijker , a person who looks into a mug because he wants to drink more. A second young man looks over the shoulder of the first. It is the third time that the work has been stolen, previously in 2001 and 1988.
