On Friday night a man was killed by a polar bear on the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen. According to information from the authorities, the attack happened around four o'clock on a campsite near Longyearbyen.

The identity of the deceased was not yet known on Friday morning. The polar bear was also shot at.

When the police arrived, however, the animal was gone. The bear was later found dead in the parking lot of an airfield.

In the past few days, polar bears have been approaching the settlement more often. As a rule, the animals are driven away or moved by helicopter. The people of Longyearbyen are called upon not to leave the village unarmed.
