The American actor Chadwick Boseman, who became known as the "Black Panther" star, is dead. The 43-year-old died of cancer, said his family on Friday evening "with immeasurable sadness" on Twitter and Instagram. Accordingly, the black actor has suffered from colon cancer since 2016. He died in his house with his family. The Boseman team confirmed the death of the actor for the film magazine "Variety".

The news caused consternation among colleagues and fans. Oscar winner Brie Larson posted a broken red heart on Twitter. "You will be missed and never forgotten," wrote the actress. "Rest in love, brother," mourned actor Dwayne Johnson. "Thank you for your light and for sharing your talent with the world".

He was a "real fighter", it said in the message from Boseman's family. He made many of his films while undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. It was "the honor of his career" to bring the character T'Challa in "Black Panther" to life.

In the comic book adaptation "Black Panther" (2018) Boseman played the king's son T'Challa. It was the first superhero film with almost exclusively black actors in front of and behind the camera. He has also appeared in films such as Avengers: Infinity War, 21 Bridges and most recently in Da 5 Bloods, directed by Spike Lee. This last film has been on the Netflix streaming service since June.

He first caught on in Hollywood in 2013 in the role of baseball star Jackie Robinson in the sports drama "42". A year later he played the "Godfather of Soul", singer James Brown in "Get On Up". In a SPIEGEL review from 2014, it was said that while Boseman doesn't look very similar to Brown, he transports his manic energy as an actor with tremendous concentration.
