Television in the test: This brand beats all competition

Stiftung Warentest takes a close look at current TV sets. There are also good grades for cheap products. But the test shows: if you want the best, you can't avoid a brand.

Kassel - There are over 500 TV sets in the test database of Stiftung Warentest . With the last test , of 14 devices, this was brought up to date. We have summarized for you which TV sets are the front runners in the test database and which ones should be avoided. 

Stiftung Warentest: Picture weighted the most for TV sets 

In order to be able to compare the TV sets, the experts from Stiftung Warentest have tested them in different categories. In the test , the category image was weighted the most. This makes up 40 percent of the respective overall grade. In addition to the pure eye test, the image behavior during fast movements was also examined here.

How colors and contrasts changed at different viewing angles was also part of this test category in the Stiftung Warentest test . The eye test itself was carried out in dimmed light, but tests were also carried out to determine whether the TV sets are suitable for bright surroundings.  

Stiftung Warentest: TV sets - the sound also had to withstand the test 

In the test by Stiftung Warentest , both the picture and the sound of the TV sets were compared. In the overall rating, this made up 20 percent. To be able to evaluate this, three experts were on duty. 

This was  not only assessed in the test for films, but also for music and language reproduction. Stiftung Warentest also assessed the point from which the sound began to be distorted on TV sets.

Stiftung Warentest: Handling the TV sets is an important point 

The evaluation of the handling of the TV sets in the test by Stiftung Warentest was also included  in the overall evaluation with 20 percent . Here the testers put the following under the microscope:

• Operation in daily use

• remote control 
• Installation and connections

• Operability directly on the device

• Internet use and connection 

• Instructions for use 

• Recording options

• Operation of the USB interface

Stiftung Warentest: TV sets were also examined for environmental friendliness

In the test by Stiftung Warentest , the last 20 percent fell equally across the categories of versatility and environmental properties. When assessing the environmental properties, the power consumption of the TV sets was measured and assessed. And that both in standby mode and during the eye test. If the devices had a quick start function, the power consumption was also included in the evaluation. 

In addition to the power consumption, the TV sets  were also examined in a  test by Stiftung Warentest for flame retardants, which have a problematic environmental balance. From the point of view of versatility, the receivers as well as the connections and additional functions were examined.

Of the total of 506 TV sets in the test by Stiftung Warentest  , only eight of the TV sets achieved a very good overall result. In test 24 different brands were represented in total. Only two of the brands had TV sets that were rated very good.  

Of the eight with very well-rated TV equipments in the test of Stiftung Warentest  were six of the brand LG , including the LG OLED65C97LA 65 inches (of advertising link), and two of the brand Samsung . The main difference between the models was found in the image category. Here, the devices from LG were better suited for operation in a bright environment than those of the competitor Samsung , which is why the two Samsung models were awarded only one grade good in this sub-category. Stiftung Warentest: These are the losers in the TV set test

In Stiftung Warentest's test database, only two of the total of 506 TV sets achieved poor results. The currently unavailable TV sets both only achieved a poor score of 5.5 in the sound category. The Live 24C from Dyon also only achieved a poor result in the environmental properties category with a grade of 4.6. The reason for this is the environmentally harmful flame retardant decabromobiphenyl ether, which was used in the TV housing. 

In the test by Stiftung Warentest ,  the instructions for use of the LEDW22 by Reflexion were only rated as sufficient, which means that it scored worse in the handling category with a rating of only 4.0 than the Live 24C, which was able to achieve a rating of 3.4 . The bottom two of the TV set database both had their first online presence in 2018.

Stiftung Warentest: The best TV sets under 500 euros 

The test by Stiftung Warentest (Stiftung Warentest examines digital cameras: good cameras have their price *) compared TV sets from different price ranges. If you are looking for a TV set for less than 500 euros, you don't necessarily have to do without good quality. 

The winner of the Stiftung Warentest test  in the price range under 500 euros comes from the South Korean manufacturer LG ; in a comparison of the five best TV sets under 500 euros, the 50UM74507LA was able to overtake its competition, especially in the sound category.
