Philippe Gilbert of Lotto-Soudal and Spanish Rafael Valls of Bahrain McLaren retired from the Tour de France due to injuries following yesterday's crashes during the first stage of the Grande Boucle.
Gilbert sustained the fracture of the left patella, while Valls the fracture of the clavicle. Also the German John Degenkolb also of the Lotto retired from the race that yesterday crossed the finish line with more than eighteen minutes late and is the only one to have finished outside the time limit. The German had fallen 65 kilometers from the finish, finishing the race alone.
