Cinema numbers for "Tenet": Is the film by Christopher Nolan the savior of the Corona cinema?

At first the cinemas were closed for months. Then the films were missing to bring the audience back. Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" should change that - at least it succeeded on the starting weekend.

"Tenet" is, as the trailer reveals, about the end of the world.

The nameless protagonist should prevent that if possible, he should save humanity from the catastrophe.

This also applies a little to the movie itself: Christopher Nolan's science fiction action thriller, which started last Thursday, was supposed to save the cinema from the economic catastrophe after the Corona break.

And the audience numbers show that he - at least somewhat - has succeeded.

Best theatrical release in months

Over the weekend, the film was shown in 680 German cinemas on around 2,200 screens.

Nolan attracted 320,000 visitors to the cinema in Germany, generating sales of around 3.2 million euros.

If you add up the 60,000 viewers who saw the film on its starting day Wednesday, you get 380,000 cinema tickets sold.

That gave Nolan the best start of a film in many months.

As the industry magazine "Variety" reports, the film has also filled international cinemas: the film has grossed around 53 million dollars at the box office so far.

But: That is of course not particularly difficult, some could even claim that it was something to be expected.

After all, the cinema halls had to remain empty for months during the corona-related lockdown.

The cinemas have now been open again for a few weeks - subject to conditions such as seat spacing.

But there was a lack of films.

Eventually, the launches of many movies were postponed in order to reach a wide audience.

So also "Tenet", for which there were three different start dates.

Cinema operators should be pleased that "Tenet" now attracted large numbers of viewers to the cinema.

However, a single blockbuster won't save the industry - because the pandemic has cost the industry billions.

And the film is said to have cost more than $ 200 million.

"Tenet" is still a ray of hope: In Germany, the film is the most successful since the Corona lockdown.

But we won't know for a few days whether this also applies to the USA.

Nolan's film initially started in Europe.

At the weekend, the film will also reopen the US cinema season.
