The changes in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic have massively affected our economy and our entire social life.

Nobody was prepared for the dramatic consequences of this crisis.

Concepts and strategies had to be developed in a great hurry to contain the virus.

The priority was to avoid overloading our health system.

There were lives to be saved.

The measures taken have had an impact.

And that was good.

However, the resulting consequences were dramatic for many areas of life.

On the one hand for the economy: trade, gastronomy and the travel industry were practically at a standstill, orders in many branches of business collapsed, some production sites were closed, millions of employees had to go on short-time work.

Social life also largely came to a standstill: cinemas, theaters and museums closed, sporting events and concerts were canceled, visits and social contact with one another were largely excluded, old people were isolated, schools and day-care centers closed.

Many measures have now been relaxed.

And in many areas, our lives seem to be slowly returning to normal: People are going back to work, children back to daycare centers and schools.

Social contacts are gradually becoming possible again, but with reservations.

But we will probably have to live with the virus for months, maybe even years.

And during this time we cannot hope and wait that we will eventually have our former normality back.

In many cases, the corona crisis only accelerated the overdue transformation process.

Questions must be allowed.

They are even urgently indicated.

Why do airlines have to be subsidized by the state?

Why do teachers and students have to buy computers at their own expense in order to learn digitally?

Why do nurses and educators earn so little money?

Who bears the real environmental costs of transporting goods around the globe?

How much debt do we want to leave future generations in trying to restore our old status quo?

Finding smart answers to these questions is a challenge.

In order to develop sustainable solutions, we need the best minds in our country.

Economists, sociologists and experts from other fields belong around the table.

With the digital event "Rethinking society", CHALLENGE, the future initiative of the SPIEGEL Group, wants to make a contribution.

On September 15, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. on https://challenge.jetzt, the CHALLENGE website, a panel discussion with those affected and respected experts will take place to debate this topic.

The Berlin sociologist Jutta Allmendinger will be there and will open the event with a keynote speech.

She will then sit on the podium with athlete Thomas Röhler (2016 Olympic champion in javelin throw), culture producer Iyabo Kaczmarek, startup entrepreneur Philip Siefer and manager Gyde Opitz.
