The fire on the supertanker "New Diamond" off the east coast of Sri Lanka has flared up again.

Air force photos show the fire fighting operation.

On board the ship: 270,000 tons of crude oil - the cargo has so far been spared.

The fire had already broken out on Thursday after an explosion in the engine room and had also reached the bridge.

The crew sent an emergency call - 22 crew members were evacuated.

One person is still missing.

After around 72 hours of fighting the fire, including the use of extinguishing powder, it was said at the weekend:

Dushan Wijesinghe, Air Force spokesman

"If you look at the pictures before and after the chemical powder is sprayed, it is clear that the fire has been completely extinguished."

Apparently a hasty assessment: Strong winds and the great heat on board fueled the fire again on Monday.

A Navy spokesman said the fire was still burning but was now better under control.
