(ANSAmed) - ZAGREB, SEPTEMBER 08 - "Keeping the country open during the peak of the tourist season, with the coronavirus epidemic, was a calculated risk of my government".
The Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said this in an interview with the American CNN.
"Croatia had a very tough lockdown regime in the spring, and then slowly reopened from May," explained Plenkovic, indicating that then the number of positive cases per day at Covid-19 was one or two, and in some days even zero.
"For this reason - he added - we have decided to allow tourists to come to the Croatian Adriatic coast without any restrictions".
"The tourist season, under the circumstances, was excellent, far above expectations," noted Plenkovic.
In fact, the latest figures indicate that between June and August in Croatia there were 7.5 million tourists, 54% of those registered last year in the same period.
To date, there are still 220,000 on the coast, of which 170,000 are foreigners.
For this reason, Croatia is among the Mediterranean countries that register small contracts in the tourism sector, albeit between 40 and 50% compared to 2019. (ANSAmed).
