An anti-Semitic attack has apparently occurred in a Heidelberg student union.

The investigators accuse seven men and one woman of mistreating and insulting a 25-year-old.

The man was slightly injured.

The incident occurred on August 29, according to a press release.

The 25-year-old attended a celebration of "Normannia" on Saturday morning.

After he said that he had Jewish ancestors, several fraternity members reportedly beat him on the legs and on the back with belts.

They are also said to have pelted him with coins and abused him anti-Semitically.

According to investigators, the man filed a complaint on the same day.

Four days later, officials ransacked the compound's home, the report said.

You have taken "extensive evidence".

"Common ritual"?

At the request of SPIEGEL, the responsible public prosecutor did not provide any further information about the suspects or what happened.

It is becoming apparent, however, according to the report, that the "belting" is a "common ritual of suspects".

This is "generally accepted" by those involved.

When asked, the spokesman did not say whether other people were also beaten with belts that evening.

Dissolution announced

According to its own information, the fraternity "Normannia" has existed since 1890. A few days after the incident, the association announced the dissolution of its activities.

These are the members who are still studying.

"Normannia" left inquiries from SPIEGEL unanswered.

According to the "Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung", its members include AfD politician Christian Wirth and the author of "Junge Freiheit", Michael Kurt Paulwitz, who ran for the right-wing extremist Republicans.
