Asia syndrome can develop after breast implants are placed and cause a number of difficult-to-diagnose symptoms. See how to identify them.

Asia Syndrome is a term that is commonly used to refer to a series of symptoms that can develop after having undergone cosmetic or reconstructive surgery with breast implants.

This condition begins to develop when the body tries to expel these external agents from the body and, failing to do so, the body begins to manifest a series of symptoms that can be ignored.

However, some doctors consider that this disease does not exist and that the symptoms may be related to other conditions, but not to breast implants, however, it is a very real disease for all women who have lived it.

For example, actress

Angeline Moncayo

, who had implants placed at the age of 18, told Un Nuevo Día that she started with very bad back and hip pain, allergies, inflammation and vertigo for no apparent reason.

"I had all kinds of symptoms, from migraines, vertigo, you forget things, constant inflammation. In my case there have been approximately 30 symptoms that have affected me," he declared.

But, Angeline is not the only woman who has been affected by this syndrome, as

Edith Otavo

and

Diana María del Castillo

, two women who had breast implants, also claimed to be victims of this condition, which can take months and even years to be diagnosed .

"My health is completely deteriorated, I feel absolutely sick, like a 90-year-old woman," admitted del Castillo.

The Breastcancer.org site notes that symptoms can occur with any type of implant, such as gel, saline, smooth, textured, or any other type of implant.

Each person can be impacted in different ways, but the main symptoms are the following:

  • Muscle and joint pain.

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Concentration and memory problems.

  • Trouble breathing.

  • Sleeping problems.

  • Rash and skin problems.

  • Dry mouth and eyes.

  • Anxiety.

  • Headaches.

  • Hair loss.

  • Gastrointestinal disorders.

Many of the symptoms of this disease are associated with autoimmune and connective tissue disorders, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma.

Some people are diagnosed with a specific autoimmune or connective tissue disorder, but many are not.

On the other hand, Dr.

Iván Santos

, plastic surgeon and expert in the Asian syndrome, indicates that the removal of implants has become one of the most performed surgeries not only in the United States but in the world.

And it is that, according to the expert, many women believe that placing implants will have no impact on health.

However, the reality is that, although it does not represent a mortal danger, it can considerably alter a person's quality of life, therefore, explantation is usually the solution to their symptoms.

In addition to this, Santos alerts women to go to a health expert to receive an accurate diagnosis, since in some cases it has been considered that these alterations are psychological or that "the person is inventing them."

For her part, the plastic surgery specialist

Nora Nugent

, told the BBC that surgeons should warn their patients about the risks of this condition, so that they can have the relevant information, as well as tell them that little is known about this condition.

Currently there are no tests or procedures to diagnose this disease, but in 2019 the FDA announced that they will take steps to better understand it and offer necessary information for women who want to undergo surgery to place or remove implants.
