The European Commission intends to strengthen its control over social networks in the fight against online disinformation.
“Platforms need to be more responsible and held to account;
they must become more transparent.
It is time to move beyond self-regulatory measures

”
said Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova.
The latter bases its remarks on a critical report, published Thursday, which assesses the first year of operation of the "code of good practice against disinformation".

Launched by Brussels in 2018, this code obliges the signatory social networks to submit regular reports on their policies to fight against false content and attempts to manipulate public opinion.
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Mozilla and more recently TikTok are signatories of this world first.
