Is the corona really "just the flu"?

Maybe just in this case

Studies on corona in children do point to a fairly similar trend, in which children are less ill than adults, but they are not always unequivocal.

According to a new study, it is likely that infection with the corona virus in children will not be much worse than the flu.

Still, the authors of the study argue that both diseases should be taken very seriously, especially in winter as countries around the world may be severely affected by both.

At least 476,000 children in the United States have contracted the corona virus, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and a report by the Children's Hospital Association published last week. From the infected.

And although the new virus is alarming and threatening, the National Children's Hospital report found that there was no "statistically significant difference" in hospitalization or treatment rates between children who had COVID-19 and those who had the flu.

In fact, the main clinical differences found between patients with the two diseases were symptomatic.

Children with corona virus were at higher risk of high fever, indigestion, stomach upset and body aches, compared to those with the flu.

Also, the chances of children developing a serious illness from each of the illnesses were similar.

As mentioned at the beginning of the epidemic, speculation has been circulating in scientific communities, and then in wider communities, that children may be somewhat immune to the disease, but since then there have been changes.

Influenza, on the other hand, is a very common disease that is especially dangerous for children and the elderly.

A study by the National Hospital for Children published in the journal JAMA Network Open diagnosed more children with the flu than with COVID-19.

The study included 315 positive children in Corona whose median age was 8.4 and more than 1,400 influenza patients whose median age was 3.9.

Asymptomatic patients who were positive for COVID-19 during admission or before hospital screening were not included in the study.

17 percent of children with coronary heart disease had to be hospitalized, as did 21 percent of those with the flu.

Admission rates to the intensive care unit were similar - six percent of COVID-19 patients in children and seven percent of influenza patients had to move to critical care departments.

In addition, children who fell ill in Corona were at higher risk of becoming seriously ill and needing respiratory machines.

1.9 percent of children with the flu had to connect to a respirator, and almost twice as many as 3.2 percent of children with corona were connected to respirators.

28 percent of children hospitalized with COVID-19 had more diarrhea and vomiting compared to children hospitalized with influenza.

The study, published last week at the JAMA Network Open, found that headaches, body aches and chest pains were three times more common in children with coronary heart disease.

Pretty similar overall.

Although the symptoms and progression of the two infections were completely similar, the study authors hoped that the subtle differences he identified might help doctors and nurses identify the respiratory viruses more quickly and correctly, just before fall, when hospitals would see an increase in influenza and coronary heart disease.

"I did not see it coming when I was thinking of doing the research," said Dr. Xiao Yan Sung, director of infection control and epidemiology and pediatrician at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. "It took several rounds of thinking and going over the data to convince "The next step for researchers is to assess the quantitative impact of school closures so we can determine at what point the cost of school closures and stays at home outweighs the benefits of reducing COVID-19 infection and the burden on the health care system."
