"Nomadland", a drama by Chinese-born director Chloé Zhao, won the award for best film at the Venice International Film Festival.

The jury announced this.

"Nomadland" is set in the midst of a growing group of impoverished elderly people living in trailers in the US who cling to the last vestiges of the American dream.

The two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand plays a widowed woman who is forced to leave her hometown after the closure of a mine and goes looking for work with the trailer.

She is accepted into the community of caravan travelers, who help each other to get the best out of their lives.

McDormand received long applause for her role at the premiere in Venice.

Apparently she played so convincingly that she was offered a job in a supermarket while filming.

Previously, McDormand was recognized for her roles as Marge on "Fargo" and Mildred on "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

The jury's grand prize, the second most important award at the festival, went to "Nuevo Orden".

The Mexican director Michel Franco paints a gloomy picture of his country in the near future and focuses on the gap between rich and poor.

for his performance in "Padrenostro", which tells of a traumatic childhood in Italy in the 1970s.

This year 18 entries competed for the main prizes.

The awards were presented by an international jury chaired by Australian actress Cate Blanchett.

The jury also included the German director Christian Petzold and the American actor Matt Dillon.

The festival opened on September 2nd with the Italian family drama "Lacci".

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world.

It was the first of the world's major festivals to have taken place as planned since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

Strict rules applied: For example, mouth and nose protection had to be worn on the premises, including the entire time in the cinema.

In addition, the temperature was measured by the visitors;
