Children with disabilities: doubly handicapped in the crisis

2020-09-13T23:11:00.962Z

In the pandemic, it suddenly no longer seems a matter of course that children with disabilities go to school. Many parents struggle hard for their daughters and sons' right to an education. Some almost despair.

Esra at school: After two hours she has to go home, says her mother

Nine-year-old Esra is allowed to go to school for two hours every day.

The autistic girl spends the time alone with a carer, this is how her mother describes it.

Most of the time, the two of them are in the school yard, but recently they have sometimes gone to a room next to the class and tried to study there.

Then the transport service picks up Esra again.

Your daughter doesn't understand why it has to be that way, she is under-challenged and desperate, says Gülsah Korkut.

Before Corona, Esra visited the evangelical special needs school in Lengerich, North Rhine-Westphalia, daily from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Now she cries a lot.

"She freaks out at little things and hits herself on the head," says the mother.

Since the end of the summer vacation, most of the other children in Germany have returned to a halfway normal school life, in a class with a full schedule.

Her special school decided that the state of emergency will continue for Esra, referring to the protection against infection.

The school management told her on the phone that the school didn't want people to die.

"I had to swallow first," says Korkut.

Esra, who has little contact with her family, should be a deadly danger to others?
