Sebastian Kurz, the Austrian leader, is worried about the growing number of cases in the country. He does not rule out toughening up the measures again.

The concern is growing.

While most European countries have been facing an upsurge in the coronavirus epidemic for several weeks, Austria, she bluntly believes that she has entered "the second wave" of Covid-19 infections.

This is in any case what Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Sunday, while the number of positive cases continues to increase.

From Friday to Saturday, this country of 9 million inhabitants recorded nearly 870 new cases, more than half of which in the capital, Vienna.

Austria has 33,000 cases and 750 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Avoid a second confinement, but ...

"We are at the start of the second wave," Sebastian Kurz said in a statement, warning that the country would soon exceed 1,000 new cases per day, and calling on the population to strictly adhere to anti-virus measures and to reduce as much as possible contacts.

On Friday, the Austrian government has already announced a tightening of measures, concerning the wearing of masks and public gatherings, to reverse the curve.

From Monday, masks, which were already mandatory in supermarkets and transport, will also be mandatory in all shops and public buildings.

Mr Kurz warned that if the number of cases continued to rise, he was not ruling out further measures, but expressed hope to avoid a second lockdown.
