Wonder Woman 1984: Warner pushes back film release until Christmas again

2020-09-13T11:19:54.893Z

Already shifted for the first time, Patty Jenkins' film was due out on September 30 in France and in October in the rest of the world. Even if the studios do not detail this choice, it seems logical to think that this decision leaves the field open to Tenet to repay his investment in the long term.

The success of

Tenet

, the first big-budget film launched since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, will not have been enough.

Warner Studios has announced a new carryover of

Wonder Woman 1984

.

It will therefore be released at Christmas, on December 25 to be precise, a period which is normally very fruitful in terms of cinema attendance.

Wonder Woman Outfit

Postponed for the first time in June, the blockbuster featuring the heroine of DC Comics, was to arrive on screens on October 2.

"But because I know how important it is for you as well that the film is shown in theaters, I'm sure you won't mind making you wait a little longer"

, explained the director of the film Patty. Jenkins.

Tenet

, a 200 million dollar film

Around the world, cinemas are reopening in small doses, with limited capacity, especially in China.

But the United States keeps the doors of their dark rooms closed in the big cities, from Los Angeles to New York.

In France, they have reopened, while imposing a physical distancing which reduces the number of spectators.

We do not know if

Wonder Woman 1984

will be released on the same date in France.

Is it because Warner has not yet fully repaid its investment in

Tenet

that this decision has been made?

Estimated at 200 million dollars, the film has grossed, so far, 146.2 million.

The next studios that will take the risk of broadcasting a big production will be those of Disney, which will present the Marvel

Black Widow

on November 6

.

Sony calls Warner's strategy a "mistake"

For their part, Sony executives have not mince words regarding the Warner group's strategic bet.

On September 9, The Wrap echoed the scathing words uttered by Tony Vinciquerra, president of Sony Pictures who spoke at the Bank of America 2020 conference:

"We will not make the mistake of bring a really, really expensive $ 200 million movie to market, unless we're sure the theaters are open and running at significant capacity.

"

The allusion is aimed directly at the blockbuster

Tenet

produced and broadcast by Warner Studios.

Between the lines, we also understand that Sony's blockbusters:

Ghostbusters: The Legacy

and

Morbius

will not be released in 2020, but on March 5, 2021 and March 19, 2021 respectively.
