The Minister for Citizenship has instructed the prefects to facilitate this process, in particular for health personnel.

Last week, in an interview with the Parisian, Marlène Schiappa said she wanted to accelerate "the naturalization of people on the front line during confinement".

This announcement will be reflected as of Tuesday morning in the facts with an instruction given to the prefects in this direction, we learned Monday from the Ministry of the Interior.

"The files on access to nationality of people who have actively contributed, on the front line, to the fight against Covid-19, in particular health personnel, will be able to see their processing accelerated and facilitated", writes the minister responsible in particular for questions related to refugees and integration.

In Paris, Marlène Schiappa had also indicated that garbage collectors or cashiers could be affected by this measure.

The State thus wishes "to recognize the commitment of people who have taken an active part in the fight against Covid-19", specifies the text, by carrying out "a priority and individualized examination of these files".

The minimum length of residence could be reduced from five to two years

Concretely, “for naturalization files […] the concept of" services rendered important "could be used to reduce the duration of the internship, that is to say the minimum duration of residence in France required, to two years, at instead of five in common law ”.

This "recognition" was "a priority" for Ms. Schiappa, we explained to the Interior Ministry.

“Some foreign people have mobilized and are particularly exposed to fight against the Covid-19 epidemic.

They actively participated in the national effort, with dedication and courage, ”she wrote again.

These “chore firsts”, she explained, also participated in “essential activities in the cleaning, hotel and catering sectors” but were “forgotten”.

“The prefectures do what they want”.

"We underestimated foreigners on the front line, in particular underpaid doctors and health workers, so it's an interesting idea", for his part observed for François Héran, demographer and head of the Migrations chair of the France secondary school.

The problem, he noted, is that once this instruction has been issued, “the prefectures do what they want”.
