Pruning Buddleia: When is the Right Time?

There are different reasons to prune a shrub: for
rejuvenation, maintenance or care,
for example.
The following list shows you when the respective cut of the buddleia is due according to the garden journal:

When choosing the right time, you should always keep in mind that the
Federal Nature Conservation Act
does not allow radical cuts between March 1st and September 30th in order to protect the wildlife.

Care tips for the Buddleia
In late summer after flowering, you should always
remove
the
withered inflorescences
before seeds can form.
Otherwise, the lilac spreads rapidly in the home garden.
Simply cut off the inflorescences to the next leaf axilla.
The cut off inflorescences then land on the compost - if there are already ovules, it is better to throw them in the household waste.
Structure cut on Buddleia - this is how it works
In order for the buddleia to grow in an optimal shape, it is worth giving it a top cut in the first few years.
In the first year you choose
three to five ground shoots as a framework
, which you shorten to 30 centimeters.
Cut off all other shoots at ground level.
During the second, third and fourth year of standing, you extend the scaffolding shoots by around 20 centimeters per year.
Shorten the side shoots on the scaffolding to stumps with one or two pairs of eyes.

So that the buddleia shines just as brightly next year as before, you should remove the faded wood from the previous year.
That is why the so-called maintenance pruning takes place from around mid-February - it gives the plant plenty of strength to sprout again in summer.
And how does it work?
Quite simple: From the fourth year on, cut the oldest ground shoot back to ten centimeters.
For this purpose, a
young ground shoot is
shortened
to 30 centimeters as a replacement
.
All other ground shoots that belong to the framework are cut to 100 centimeters.
Shorten the faded side branches from the previous year so that two to four buds remain.
Rejuvenation cut: This is how your buddleia shines in old splendor
Theoretically, a radical
rejuvenation cut
on the buddleia is possible every year.
Especially if you forgot in the years before to give the shrub a maintenance cut, it can turn into a scrub very quickly and urgently need to be clipped.
However, you shouldn't make a rejuvenation cut too often if the shrub is to have a homogeneous crown structure.
It is best to vary the types of cut.
The
tapering cut
is done as follows
: all shoots are radically cut back to 20 to 30 centimeters.
Always shorten the branches above a bud or a leaf axil.
Outdated ground shoots are derived from a young side shoot.
Shorten the remaining side branches so that there are still two eyes.
