Guy Bar, a 41-year-old resident of Arad, suffered from a tumor in his leg that developed metastases to the abdominal area that reached a weight of more than 31 kg. For years, he was treated in a hospital in the center of the country and underwent many chemotherapeutic treatments until about a month ago. Guy, who was in a very difficult physical and mental condition, was discouraged by the news of the doctors he had a few months left to live.

Guy's friend read an article recently published about surgery performed on Soroka to remove a huge tumor from his abdomen. An 84-year-old woman recommended that he try and get counseling from Prof. Yitzhak Avital, director of the Legacy Heritage Center for Oncology and the Department of Surgery A at the hospital.

Within a few days, Guy managed to get to a meeting with Prof. Avital - an internationally renowned expert in the treatment and research of cancer, who has performed many dozens of complex surgeries in the field.

At the end of the meeting with Prof. Avital, he was asked to undergo a series of tests, including an updated imaging test that showed a huge tumor that occupied the entire cavity of his abdomen.

Guy's complex case was presented to a multidisciplinary team with various specialties (radiologists, surgeons, oncologists, etc.) who discuss cases, share knowledge and make decisions accordingly.

In less than a week, the clarification and verification of the diagnosis was completed and Guy was hospitalized to perform the long and complex surgery in which the infected tumors and organs were removed.

The operation involved a multi-professional team that included: Prof. Yitzhak Avital - Director of the Legacy Center for Oncology and Department of Surgery A, Dr. Uri Natz - Senior Physician in the Department of Surgery A, Dr. Michael Rubin - specializes in the Department of Surgery A, D. R. Boris Dicker of the Anesthesia Division and the operating room nursing staff headed by Nurse Shacharit Fox.

During the lengthy operation, some of the organs that were infected with the tumor were removed from Guy's gaze - half of the small and large intestine and part of the central artery of the abdomen.

After the operation, he was hospitalized in the general intensive care unit and 24 hours later was transferred to the Department of Surgery A.

Guy's condition improved significantly and he was released to his home a week after the surgery.

He is expected to undergo another procedure of removing the primary tumor in his leg and connecting the small intestine to the colon.

A multi-professional team performed the surgery.

"During my career I have performed many dozens of complex surgeries, but removing a tumor with as much weight as in this case is extremely rare. Guy suffered greatly, and his surgery required great skill from a multi-professional team. I'm glad we gave Guy a chance and he feels better both in face "Physically and mentally. Every extra day in the lives of oncology patients is significant," said Prof. Yitzhak Avital.

"Just as soon as I was already discouraged when everyone gave up and I was sent to a home hospice to end my life, I was told the best news I could get in recent years and Soroka decided not to give up on me and give me a chance," Guy said.

"My physical condition was very difficult, and I almost lost hope, when here in Soroka they decided to give it to me. I thank first and foremost Prof. Avital and the medical and nursing staff and everyone who treated me all the way, for fighting for my life and giving me more precious time to be with family".
