Covid-19: Lyon, Nice ... for whom the next turn of the screw?

2020-09-17T19:22:51.567Z

The Minister of Health Olivier Véran presented this Thursday his strategy, region by region, to stop the acceleration of the Covi epidemic

There are fires that are more difficult to put out than others.

If the epidemic in Mayenne could be controlled this summer, some departments remain in bright red, a total of 53 are above the alert thresholds, defined with scientists.

Number of contagions, rate of positive tests, entries into intensive care are scrutinized with the greatest attention.

Tables and forecasts in support, Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, therefore announced this Thursday new restrictions during his press conference, a consequence of the acceleration of the virus in France.

"What worries us is the epidemic dynamic in certain territories," he said.

After Marseille and Bordeaux, where restrictive measures were taken on Monday, who is concerned?

Lyon and Nice in sight.

In the capital of the Gauls, the incidence rate, that is to say the number of inhabitants positive for the coronavirus, is now nearly 200 per 100,000, i.e. four times higher than the alert threshold, set at 50. The virus affects the elderly there more and more (more than twice the alert threshold for those over 65).

Same concern on the Côte d'Azur where this rate in Nice is close to 150 and approaching 100 for the most vulnerable.

Faced with these bad figures, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes had anticipated, by forcing bars and restaurants to draw the curtain earlier.

This time, we'll have to toughen things up a bit more.

At the request of the government, elected officials and local actors in the Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes will have, from Saturday, to propose specific measures to halt the progression of the virus.

Then Rennes or Paris?

Other cities are also in the sights such as Rennes, Paris, Toulouse or Dijon where the incidence rate is three to four times higher than the alert threshold.

"We will be extremely attentive to the evolution of the situation in these metropolises", insisted Olivier Véran.

"These local measures make it possible to find the right balance between the health reality and the economic situation", agrees the doctor Anne-Marie Moulin.

Elderly people, protect yourself!

As we knew, the number of infections was on the rise in young people this summer and this rate has now reached 140 per 100,000 in 15-40 year olds with 50% asymptomatic.

The risk ?

Let the children not then infect their parents and grandparents, who are more prone to severe forms of the disease.

And that is what is happening.

For several weeks, figures have shown that the circulation of the Covid has accelerated among those over 65.

“Since August, the impact has been real and visible,” said the Minister of Health, particularly in intensive care.

So Olivier Véran sent a warning message to our elders, already very respectful of barrier gestures, urging them to redouble their efforts and sacrifices.

"You are the most fragile in the face of Covid […], which is why I am asking you to protect yourself even more", insisted the minister, inviting them to reduce their contacts even more each day.

Marseille and Guadeloupe, still under close surveillance.

Early closure of bars, limitation of groupings, cancellation of major events ... These measures are already in force but if the health situation does not improve next week and the number of intensive care admissions continues to grow, other decisions "Even stronger" can be taken, warned Olivier Véran.

Among the possibilities, the closing of bars or the ban on public gatherings.

“Studies show that in bars it is the moment when we take off the mask, where we are less careful, notes Pierre Tattevin, infectious disease specialist at Rennes University Hospital.

It is a good strategy to adapt the measurements according to the circulation of the virus.

Again an impact in sheave.

Why this threat?

In Paca, 139 beds are currently occupied by Covid patients out of the 537 in the region, i.e. a rate of 26%, almost twice as much as at the national level.

And if that continues, at the end of September, this number will climb to 300 patients.

And in the second half of October, full capacities will be reached.

“If we do nothing, warned Olivier Véran, we risk no longer being able to take care of all the patients who need it.
