Millions of hectares gone up in smoke, billions of dollars in damage, dozens of deaths and smoke spreading thousands of kilometers to Europe.

The toll of the fires that have been raging for weeks in the western United States is already very heavy.

It could continue to grow heavier as the days go by, especially since the fire season is far from over.

Our infographics allow you to get an idea of the scale of the ongoing disaster.

California, the most affected state

Since last month, about two million hectares have been burned on the west coast in Washington state, Oregon and California.

The flames caused the most damage in the latter, with around 1.3 million hectares burned and at least 25 dead.

Only one of these fires, dubbed the August Complex Fire, has devoured approximately 800,000 ha in northern California since mid-August.

This makes him the biggest fire in the history of the state, by far.

Since the start of the year, there have already been more than 7,600 fires in California compared to just under 5,000 for the whole of 2019.

As if all of Slovenia was on fire

It is difficult to visualize what exactly the burnt area represents when it is measured in millions of hectares.

This represents around 20,000 km², the size of a country like Slovenia or half the Netherlands.

Compared to France, it is as if the flames were going to cover all of Île-de-France and part of the neighboring departments.

It is also the equivalent of the two largest French departments, the Gironde and the Landes.

More than twice the giant fires of 2019 in the Amazon

Historic in the American context, today's fires fall into the category of some of the most devastating fires in the world since last year.

We remember in particular the tens of thousands of fires that reduced to ashes nearly a million hectares in the Amazon in 2019.

The flames did even more damage in Australia's last fire season with more than 18 million hectares burned.

In addition to the area affected, they had caused the death of around thirty people.

"Black summer", as it has been nicknamed, is also said to have caused the death of hundreds of millions of mammals, birds and reptiles.

This summer, the heat was also the source of huge fires in Siberia, Russia.

Since January, the region has seen at least 19 million hectares destroyed, according to figures from Greenpeace Russia.

This assessment, which is equivalent to the area of Greece, was drawn up at the end of July and it is undoubtedly even heavier in reality.
