(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 17 - The court of Kigali, capital of Rwanda, today denied the release on bail of Paul Rusesabagina, the 'African Schindler' whose rescue of 1,200 people from the 1994 genocide inspired the Hollywood film 'Hotel Rwanda' .

Rusesabagina is on trial for 13 counts, including terrorism, murder, financing and support of rebel groups.

    Arrested last month under obscure circumstances, the man - who has lived abroad for years - is an opponent of the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.

The latter denied the kidnapping instead reported by the family of the now accused.

"The court finds that the indictments of the prosecution are heavy and serious," said Judge Dorothy Yankurije, rejecting the bail request.

"The court ruled that Rusesabaginasia be placed in jail on a provisional basis for a minimum of 30 days pending his trial," he added.

    Rusesabagina immediately announced that he will appeal against this decision, and has five days.

The man asked for bail to be treated as a survivor of a tumor, heart patient and hypertensive;

conditions that require constant care, as previously mentioned by his family.

"The concerns raised by Mr. Rusesabagin are baseless, since he does not demonstrate how being in prison prevents him from accessing all the medical attention he needs," the judge said.

(HANDLE).
