Even experienced motorway police officers were speechless: In Canada, a patrol followed a speeding Tesla. Both inmates apparently had their seats flat and were napping themselves.

One of the selling points for a Tesla is the car's ability to drive partially autonomously.

But as is now happening in Canada, the manufacturer probably didn't think so.

There the police stopped a Tesla that had previously been noticed at significantly excessive speed on the highway.

Both occupants of the car had apparently gone to sleep while driving.

As the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Thursday (local time), the incident happened in the province of Alberta and already in July of this year, as reported by the British Guardian, among others.

However, the charges against the 20-year-old driver have now been officially announced.

He is charged with speeding and endangering road traffic.

He will have to answer in court in December.

A highway patrol discovered the Tesla Model S near the city of Penoka.

The car was traveling at 140 instead of the permitted 110 kilometers per hour.

"Both front seats were completely flat and both occupants seemed to be asleep," said the RCMP statement.

When the officers in the patrol car wanted to draw attention to themselves with blue lights, the vehicle accelerated - according to the police "to exactly 150 kilometers per hour".

"You couldn't see any occupants through the car window," said officer Darri Turnbull to CBS News: "I've been with the police for 23 years, most of the time with the traffic police. That makes me speechless."

It is not the first such case in Canada.

The police only pulled a Tesla driver out of circulation in January.

He had taken both hands off the steering wheel to floss the spaces between his teeth - at 135 km / h.

In Germany, advertising with the "autopilot" is no longer allowed

In the United States, authorities are currently investigating a number of accidents related to the "autopilot" function of Tesla vehicles.

In one case, the driver was playing on his cell phone at the time of the accident.

In any case, the function is controversial, in Germany Tesla is no longer allowed to advertise with the term "autopilot".

"Autopilot" is not a real self-control system, just a driver assistance system.

Tesla always points out that the person at the wheel should always keep track of the traffic situation and control the vehicle.

In Germany, fully autonomous cars are not allowed under applicable regulations.
