Open Hub Med, the main Italian Internet eXchange, i.e. the hub that allows different providers to exchange Internet traffic, is the first neutral and independent technological headquarters in Southern Italy for housing the technological equipment of telecommunications operators. media companies specialized in the provision of services and content through the web (better known as Over-the-top or OTT), businesses and public administration.
The Sicilian interconnection hub thus becomes in effect the seat of a node of the national network entirely in optical fiber of Open Fiber, a "door" through which each operator can pass in order to offer users even more performing digital services.
Carini, therefore, the nerve center for the global fiber hub.
"For years Sicily has had all the potential to be a fundamental hub for international traffic coming from North Africa and the Middle East - says Danilo Lo Bello, operational manager of Open Hub Med -. In particular, the idea of the Carini site was born from the will of our partners to invest in the territory to intercept what is the international market, but also that of services in the South. For the first time in Carini, Sicily, you can buy services that until yesterday were the prerogative of other cities such as Milan and other areas of the country ".
The pandemic has changed habits and needs also in the digital world with users forced to move from their offices to their homes.
"After the lockdown we realized that the internet is not just a convenience - adds Lo Bello - but a real need for everyday life. Companies have dedicated IT services but they were closed, private homes are another thing, and therefore all the data flow. of private users recorded an overload. Here it happened that the operators-customers had to work safely, together with us, to make extensions so that both the students and the workers who were at home in smart working could work almost as in office. Digital has entered our homes strongly and thanks to our presence - continues Lo Bello - local operators have had greater simplicity than some operations that they should have done perhaps in Milan or in other cities ".
Carini looks to the future with optimism.
"The first investment made by our partners is now almost saturated - concludes Lo Bello - we were lucky enough to be perceived by Sicilian customers and not as a place to invest.
